Songkran in Phuket Old Town: Heritage and Culture

For those who prefer a more traditional and family-friendly vibe, Phuket Old Town offers a “retro-themed” celebration. On Thalang Road, you can witness the Phuket Heritage Wave Festival, featuring cultural parades, traditional costumes, and live performances. Dibuk Road often hosts alcohol-free events where participants dress in traditional Thai attire to pour water over Buddha images, a ritual known as Song Nam Phra, to symbolise purification.

The historic Sino-Portuguese architecture provides a stunning, Instagram-worthy backdrop for a version of the festival that leans into heritage. For a spiritual start to the day, Wat Mongkol Nimit is the perfect place for merit-making rituals and receiving blessings from elders.

The History of Traditional Thai Dress

Thai clothing’s journey begins with the “chong kraben” (โจงกระเบน), a simple rectangular cloth both men and women wrapped around their lower bodies. This practical garment dominated Thai fashion for centuries. Men wore it mid-thigh length; women extended it below the knee. Class distinctions showed through fabric choice: silk for nobility, cotton for commoners.

The real transformation started during King Chulalongkorn‘s reign (1868-1910). As Thailand modernized, Western influences merged with Thai aesthetics. Stitched clothing replaced wrapped garments among Bangkok’s elite. The monarchy adopted Victorian elements while preserving Thai identity.

The defining moment came in the 1960s when Queen Sirikit recognized Thailand needed distinctive national attire for international diplomacy. She commissioned eight official styles of traditional Thai dress, creating what we recognize today as formal Thai costume. Her vision preserved Thai textile traditions while making sure that the garments suited modern occasions.

As one of the most significant creatures in Thai culture and Buddhism, the Naga is deeply rooted in folklore, religion, and art. Thailand is not just about the nightlife, beautiful beaches, or amazing cuisine, but it is also the land of belief, myths, and stories.

The stories and beliefs surrounding the creature appear to have originated in India and have since merged with local folklore, becoming well-known Naga in Thailand.
What is the Naga in Thailand?

The Thai word for “Naga” is “นาค” (nâak). These mythical creatures are serpent-like beings, and they are often depicted as a dragon-like creature, with long bodies, intricate scales, and sometimes, multiple heads. Depending on the religion, Nagas in Thailand are interpreted and their appearance differs with slight variations. They are also shape shifters, with multiple stories in Thai mythology stating that some even marry humans.

Most Nagas have multiple heads (ranging from three, five, seven, up to nine). Their colors, powers, and even status in the mythical world vary depending on their lineage. According to Buddhist texts, Nagas in Thailand are also classified by their birth, venom, attack style, and habitat. They can be born fully formed, from a womb, from eggs, or born from moisture and sweat.

Different Types of Naga in Thailand

These mythological classifications make the Naga one of the most complex and mighty creatures in Thai culture. Their existence in folklore and Thai culture exhibits the blending Buddhist teachings, Hindu cosmology, and Thai folklore into a rich and layered mythology.

The classifications of the Naga shapes their depictions and appearances. According to Thai mythology, the Nagas in Thailand are divided into four main lineages. Each of the families have different characteristics, and their colors are also dependent on their origins.

What is Songkran?

Did you know that Songkran festival is known as the world’s largest water fight? Songkran is actually the Thai New Year celebration. It takes place annually from April 13 to 15, though celebrations in Thai provinces other than Bangkok can last longer.

Why is Songkran Celebrated?

Songkran originates from the Sanskrit word “saṃkrānti”, meaning “astrological passage,” signifying a new solar cycle. Traditionally, Songkran was a time to honor elders, pay respects to Buddha, and cleanse homes and temples to start the new year with good fortune.

In modern times, Songkran festival still holds deep importance to Thai people. Often, locals would visit temples to offer food to monks, pour scented water over Buddha statues, and seek blessings from elders.

The famous water fights symbolize washing away bad luck from the past year, leaving room for a fresh start.

How Did Songkran Start?

Thailand is a cultural crossroads, shaped by the influences of its neighbors, yet distinctly its own. Songkran, Thailand’s famous water festival, is no exception. It is a celebration with deep roots, stretching back centuries to ancient Brahman and Buddhist traditions. Once linked to Hindu astrology, it eventually became woven into the very fabric of Thai culture.

But Songkran festival was not always the high-energy, city-wide water fight we know today. In the past, it was a quiet, intimate affair, centered around family, temples, and tradition. People would visit wats (temples), offer food to monks, and pour water over Buddha statues and elders as a symbol of respect and purification.

Somewhere along the way, the gentle trickle of water turned into playful splashes, which then escalated into the country’s biggest nationwide water battle. April is also the hottest month of the year, so some Thais do joke about the festival being a relief from the heat.

How To Celebrate Songkran

Before Songkran became a water festival, it was a family and temple-focused holiday. People spent the day cleaning their homes, preparing food for monks, and visiting family members.

Today, Songkran festival has evolved into a massive celebration that attracts visitors from around the world. While traditional customs remain, Songkran is now famous for its street-wide water fights, music, and festive atmosphere. However, the cultural and religious roots of the festival remain strong. Many people still start the day with temple visits, merit-making, and family gatherings before heading to the streets for fun.

If you find yourself in Thailand during Songkran festival, brace yourself—you will get drenched. There is no escape. A quick run to 7-Eleven? Risky. Even the unsuspecting and the unwilling become targets in this nationwide water fight. Locals and tourists alike flood the streets, armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses, turning entire cities into splash zones of joy. Want to join in? Here is how to celebrate:

1. Join the Water Fights
• Popular streets turn into massive splash zones where anyone can join.
• Use waterproof gear to protect your phone and valuables.
• Keep your valuables close, it’s always a packed celebration.
• Be respectful! If someone doesn’t look like they’re having fun, don’t splash water on them. Especially if it’s too cold.

2. Visit a Temple
• Many people offer food to monks, pour water over Buddha statues, and make merit.
• This is a peaceful way to experience the festival’s spiritual side.

3. Take Part in Traditional Ceremonies
• Pour water over the hands of elders to seek their blessings.
• Participate in sand pagoda-building at temples, an old tradition believed to bring good luck.

4. Dress for The Occasion!
• Many Thais wear bright floral shirts or traditional silk outfits for the occasion.
• Shops and markets sell colorful Songkran-themed attire for visitors to join in.
• Don’t have any of these? Any bright, flowy, floral shirt will do!

H2: Where To Celebrate Songkran in Phuket
Phuket is one of the best places to experience Songkran, with celebrations happening all over the island. Here are some top spots:
1. Bangla Road (Patong Beach)
This is Songkran on overdrive—loud music, DJs, and water fights that rage from day to night. If you are looking for a wild, high-energy party, this is the place to be.
2. Phuket Old Town
A beautiful fusion of past and present, Phuket Old Town offers a balanced mix of cultural traditions and modern festivities. Enjoy street food, watch traditional performances, and take in the historic architecture—all while staying refreshingly soaked.
3. Local Temples
For a calmer, more traditional Songkran, visit a temple. Here, you can participate in Buddhist rituals, water blessings, and merit-making—a meaningful way to embrace the festival’s spiritual essence without the splash-heavy chaos.

The Origins of Loy Kratong Festival

In its early incarnations, Loy Kratong was a ritual practised by the common folk to express their deep gratitude to the river and its life-sustaining waters. The Loy Kratong Festival has a legend surrounding it, and the birth of this tradition is from Nang Noppamas — a consort in the royal court of the Sukhothai Kingdom. She was known for her exceptional beauty, grace, and intelligence. Nang Noppamas was deeply devoted to her people and was keenly aware of the significance of the river that flowed through the kingdom.

Respect and Appreciation in Thai Culture

Thailand’s culture is renowned for its respectful and soft nature. Within that, the gestures and soft spokenness is actually rooted from a place of appreciation. Thai people have an innate ability to convey their feelings, thoughts, and respect through non-verbal communication. Soft, graceful movements and expressions are the language of respect. The Thai “wai” — a gesture of pressing one’s palms together accompanied by a slight bow — reflects appreciation and acknowledgment. It’s a non-verbal symphony that resonates with grace, kindness, and an unspoken understanding of shared humanity.

Appreciation for tradition is a defining trait of Thai culture. Ancient customs and ceremonies are revered and preserved as a testament to the nation’s rich history. By continuing these traditions, Thais honour the wisdom and customs of their forefathers, demonstrating respect for the cultural tapestry that binds their society together.

The admiration and reverence in Thai culture are masterworks. Genuine demonstrations of respect for the people, customs, and environment around them may be seen in the soft-spoken gestures, delicate manners, and peaceful interactions rather than just as social conventions. It is a society that values the elegance of simplicity, the tenacity of tradition, and the depth of interpersonal relationships. The language of gratitude is spoken from the heart in the kingdom of smiles.

Family, Friends, and Togetherness during the Loy Kratong Festival

The way Thais celebrate the Loy Kratong Festival with a sense of community, the heart of the celebration lies in creating the Krathong — traditionally made from banana stalks and leaves. The stalk is adorned with beautifully created flowers and the folding of banana leaves into various designs. Usually, the afternoon of Loy Kratong day is dedicated to creating kratongs. Candles are carefully lit and placed on the kratong with incense and sometimes, coins as a representation of wealth and luck.

These intricately adorned boats symbolise gratitude to the river, water spirits, and the act of letting go of one’s troubles and ill-fortunes. People craft kratongs with great care, decorating them with flowers, incense sticks, candles, and sometimes even a lock of hair or a fingernail as a symbolic gesture. As the kratongs are set adrift on the water, the shimmering candles cast a mesmerising glow on the surface, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

The Loy Kratong Festival is a testament to the deep spiritual and cultural connection Thais have with water and their environment. It’s a time of reflection, gratitude, and celebration, blending reverence with enchantment in a way that truly captivates the heart and soul of Thailand.
